Meet Councillor Martin Reid
A lifelong Meadowvale resident, Councillor Martin Reid has dedicated over two decades to serving his community. Elected as Ward 9 Councillor in 2022, Martin brings firsthand knowledge, passion, and experience to his role, striving to make Ward 9 a better place for all.
With a background in social work from the University of Waterloo and a Master’s in Marriage and Family Counselling from Tyndale University, Martin’s career has been rooted in community well-being. From frontline work with the Toronto Salvation Army to coordinating housing initiatives at The Dam youth drop-in centre (Meadowvale), his dedication to service, led him to establish his own wellness business in 2002.
Martin’s leadership extends beyond the council chamber. As a founding member of Mayor Crombie’s Black Caucus, he played a key role in addressing systemic barriers and advocating for equity in Mississauga. Inspired by this work, he sought mentorship from retiring Councillor, Pat Saito, shaping his mission to Support, Amplify, and Connect—values that now define his approach to public service.
During his first term, Martin has already achieved significant milestones, including:
- Appointing the first-ever Black male member to the Peel Police Services Board.
- Advocating for stronger housing protections, notably supporting 205 seniors transitioning out of Heritage Glen after eviction notices were issued.
- Championing, Black-led initiatives, such as the B3 Funding Framework to support Black-owned businesses and community organizations.
- Playing a key role in opening the Peel Reception Centre, the largest facility of its kind for homeless asylum claimants.
- Securing a one-year pilot project for a $1.00 all-day transit fare for seniors and free rides for children under 12—an impressive win for a first-time Councillor.
- Strengthening local businesses by working closely with IDEA (Mississauga’s Economic Development Department) and co-founding the Meadowvale Business Association to support businesses in Wards 9 and 11.
- Bringing faith communities together by creating the Faith Leaders Action Group (F.L.A.G.), empowering local faith leaders to take collective social action.
Recognized for his decades of volunteer service, Martin was awarded the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Pin in 2022. Martin and his wife Alexandra are proud parents of four young adults.
Martin’s vision for Ward 9 is clear: a community where future generations can afford a home, raise their families, and safely enjoy Mississauga’s parks and trails.
“I approached retiring Councillor Pat Saito to prepare me for the position of Ward 9 Councillor. Pat was a patient mentor who taught me the value of taking swift action, the enjoyment of supporting residents, the importance of amplifying the non-profit institution’s vision within the community and the ongoing need for connecting neighbours to one another. Support, Amplify and Connect has become my mission for the role of Ward 9 Councillor.”
